STORIES & TESTIMONIALS
The guy at one house was hesitant at praying in the beginning, but by the time we left, we were able to pray with him and his wife. She was pretty upset, but would cheer up here and there. The hard part was she was a hoarder. One of our team went through a bunch of stuff with her and it helped her throw things out and be ok with going through it. She just spent the time with her. Everyone else thought it is junk but to this woman it all meant something, so someone taking the time to go through it all with her, meant a lot.
One guy said – “All I want for Christmas is a floor.” At the pace things are going, it looks like he will have his Christmas wish.
While putting in a hard day’s work, we were able to stop and pray with the owner and minister to him. He saw that we cared beyond showing up and just tearing up his house, that we were able to make connections and talk to him about things going on in his life apart from the hurricane.
We met a hard core Jersey man. He came to look at his house and wallow a little, He began sharing with us where things used to be like the garage and deck. However, he went on to say but this stuff doesn’t really matter, what really mattered was he just lost his sister to cancer in Sept. He continued to share where he was at emotionally, so we asked if we could pray for him and at the end, he was really broke down a little from being so hard core.
Union Beach – We met a single mom with 3 kids. The water had raised 10 feet in her house. Today was her first day of joy because we were there, because they had help, three other groups had come by and no one was able to help her because of the type of damage. Her little 5 year old kept asking, “Mommy how come nobody will help us?” We were able to bring that glimpse of hope, as well as a simple hug and some Christmas gifts and a Bible, she had lost her Bible in the flood. She teared up while we were talking with her.
