TRIP DETAILS

On Tues., August 8, 2023, dry conditions on Maul prompted fires which turned catastrophic on Wed., August 9, as winds from Category 4 Hurricane Dora swept it into an inferno. Lahaina, home to more than 13,000 people was leveled.

 

Maui is now open to allowing volunteers to come in to help those affected by these fires.  Samaritan’s Purse has been there since the beginning working with emergency management personnel & local churches on a strategic response.  Teams will assist homeowners with content retrieval by shifting through ashes to find mementos important to them and by sharing the love of Christ as we serve in Jesus’ Name.

This will not be an easy deployment (emotionally & physically).  Housing is in tents with bunk beds/cots.  There are outdoor showers and portable bathrooms (and cold A/C in the tents at night). Everyone will be required to wear Tyvek suits and P100 respirators while sifting in the ashes (so it is HOT). No hair dryers or curling irons allowed - electricity is limited (generator). Also, this trip is not recommended for anyone with breathing difficulties/conditions.  

 

Those wishing to attend should have some prior disaster relief experience or trauma training.  Space is very limited, so if interested in going, please register or call me at 732-479-0569 as soon as possible.
